Importance of Organic Matter

March 2015 003

John waiting to be loaded with FYM

On the 6th March the favourable ground conditions meant we could finally get onto the arable fields and start preparing for spring drilling. Our first task was to spread 400 tonnes of FYM (farm yard manure) onto some over wintered stubble prior to ploughing.

Over the last 4 years we have grown to appreciate the importance of organic matter and the huge role it has on increasing crop yield, quality and soil structure. We are drilling spring barley this year using a variety called Tipple, which we hope will make malting spec.  Whilst it’s straw will be baled into small bales using our Arcusin B14 and sold to our equine customers.

Spring Calving has started.

First calf of 2015

Our Aberdeen Angus suckler herd started calving early this year with the first of the spring calves being born last week.  A strong little pedigree heifer, which we hope to retain as breeding stock for the future at J.A. Knight & Son Ltd pedigree Aberdeen Angus herd.  Our second calf came yesterday and there are a few more cows that are close to calving and my make an appearance before the weekend.

Last month we acquired a new addition to our Aberdeen Angus herd in the name of Aynho Proud Galliant, an 18 month old bull to complement our existing pedigree bull ‘Charlie’ in increasing our suckler herd to greater heights.  Galliant will be serving our young heifers in the spring in order to calf in March/April 2016.  We have had continued success in supplying Farndon Fields Farm Shop near Market Harborough with our home grown meat and are looking forward to 2015 and some newborn calves at the beginning of the year.  Our cattle are enjoying the hay and haylage that we’ve produced this season and are proving a great asset in mopping up any broken bales.

Small bale Haylage season begins

The beginning of June spelled the start of the Hay & Haylage season. Whilst we tend to wait till July before making our first batch of Hay due to the high sap content in the grass, we did not pass an opportunity in June to benefit from the sunshine and we made our first batch of small bale meadow haylage. These will be on sale in 8 weeks time to our equine customers and provide dust free forage throughout the winter months.

Open Farm Sunday

Both T7's on show at Open Farm Sunday

B T7’s on show at Open Farm Sunday

This year’s Open Farm Sunday at Farndon Fields Farm Shop near Market Harborough was a great success! We were asked to help out during the day and provide some arable machinery for the visitor’s to look at. On show were both of our Newholland T7’s and our Vaderstaad Rapid drill with GPS variable rate (see our technology page for more details). It was great to see so many visitors explore the sites of a running farm; there was everything from pigs, sheep and ducks to tractors, combines and strawberry tunnels. Even the weather came out to celebrate this national event that is run every year in June!
